Woolsery Village School

Woolsery School

The Woolsery Board opened its school in January 1879 in the centre of the village and the front of the school is very similar today, although an extra classroom was added at the beginning of this century and more recently the kitchen.

In 1988 further re-modelling was completed with the addition of a libarary and three new classrooms. In 1997 two mobile classrooms were installed on the site of the old swimming pool, one of which is home to our partner Sunflowers Preschool. The School now has a hall, five teaching areas and a resources/library area, with group work rooms and, our most recent addition, a fantastic school vegetable garden.

Since September 2008, we have been designated as a Forest School, with all children undertaking outdoor learning for six week blocks each term throughout the year. Much of this work is done in our own Forest School area which is sited on our school field, but we also use the nearby Forestry Commission land at Clifford. Our school numbers continue to rise, and in January 2008 we moved to a five-class structure. In January 2010, we will have around 135 children on roll.

The school is proud of the reputation it holds within the wider community and the fact that it draws up to a fifth of pupils from a wider area than its immediate catchment. We attach great importance to the caring family atmosphere which we encourage and maintain.

Bideford Bay Childrens Centre Befrienders and Resources

Many people find it daunting and unsettling to go into a new situation, never more so than when they are a new parent. The thought of unfamiliar faces and new places can make it hard for even the most confident person to get up the courage to go a new playgroup.

Bideford Bay Children’s Centre has come up with a new way for helping parents overcome anxiety, build confidence and get more enjoyment from its groups and services.

Patricia Chappell, Bideford Bay Children’s Centres Lead, explained, “We have trained Befrienders, who will meet you before a Children’s Centre group and go in with you, staying with you and chatting so that you never feel left out. Your Befriender will keep coming to groups with you for as long as you need, offering support, understanding and a sympathetic ear.”

“Having someone there gave me a lot of confidence,” said one of the mothers who has benefitted from the scheme. “I can’t say how much better I feel. It’s great for my baby to meet other babies and it’s great for me to get out of the house.”

And for those times when you are at home with your baby or toddler, don’t forget about the excellent Play Resource Library. You can borrow great Play Resource Packs on many different themes for your little ones, with toys, games, puzzles and much more.

Bideford Bay Children's Centres offers a number of services to parents-to-be and children under five and their families/carers, from baby and toddler groups, family support and outreach work, advice and information for parents, breastfeeding support, and links to Jobcentre plus.
